New events for this semester
We discussed again on our participation for this semester's De-Stress Fest and if we will still be in the line-up with CAPS and Urban Abbey. The plan was to contact the coordinator, Bill Pickett, and find out. As of 11/26/17, we are in the line-up and are scheduled for this date:
Monday, December 11th (11am-2pm) – Destress Zone CEC Atrium
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and NAMI on Campus UNO invite all students. Enter this zone and herbal tea, calming music, relaxation meditations, and mindfulness materials will greet you.
*Note: Urban Abbey will still be our partnering organization during this event.
We also assisted with NAMI Omaha at this year's Health and Wellness Fair at H&K gym on Nov. 9th, giving them our info for future meetings and events. Next was on our annual report for NAMI Nebraska's annual meeting in the CEC on Oct. 31st. Glad to say that NAMI Neb. is very proud of our success over the last three years we've been active. Lastly was continuing on the idea of us working with other student/campus organizations such as Network for Disability Awareness Agency/Accessibility Services, Military/Veteran Services, and UNMC student groups. If this is something we should still do, please leave a comment below!
Some of us current officers are reaching the end of our terms and will needing new officers who would love to take our place and keep NAMI on Campus UNO going! New positions going up are President, Treasurer, and Secretary. If you are interested in running for these positions, please attend our last meeting on Dec. 4th and 5th.
Next is having to introduce new card templates to attract interested persons during the student involvement fair, tabling sessions, etc. Please let us know what you think in the comments below!
Another topic brought up from our friends at NAMI Omaha was on November 30th is an event hosted by a UNO group called Community Science Table.
Stigma: Effects of Media Portrayal of Mental Health
Date: Thursday, November 30 at 5:30pm-7:30pm
Place: UNO CEC (Does not specify room number)
Topic: Discussion of how stigmatized disorders, such as mental illness, are portrayed by media. Dr. Roma Subramanian will present on how news stories on mental illness challenge or perpetuate stigma, and how visual narratives might help decrease stigma.
Again on new business is for officers and members to who would like to assist in sending our info and events to many of UNO's networking outlets such as the Bullseye, the Gateway, weekly newsletters, etc. and through a few of the buildings online advertising billboards.
Lastly is for volunteers for two upcoming events needing our participation:
Student member Taylor needs volunteers on November 30th in the MBSC first floor lobby from 9AM to 11AM, handing out information and free donuts and hot chocolate. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Taylor at firstname.lastname@example.org
Next is the Spring 2018 Student Involvement Fair on Wednesday, January 10th from 11am to 1pm in H&K lower level gym. If you are also interested in helping our organization grow or just want to help send out our information and get some volunteer hours, contact Jennifer at email@example.com
Lastly is a training opportunity exclusive for us NAMI on Campus members! A representative I have made contact with from the NAMI Neb. meeting is looking to teach students Mental Health America's Mental Health First Aid training for youth. This is a wonderful skill to have when coming across youth facing mental health crisis and you will be able to assist them successfully. We are looking for a small amount of interested students who would be willing to take on the 8-hour class. If interested, contact Jennifer.
If there are any members still interested in volunteering at Immanuel Hospital for clinical experience, please contact Jennifer as well.
